<p>Instant Pot Breakfast Casserole Sausage and Cheese is a hearty dish that will stick to your ribs and keep you going all morning long. This easy casserole can be made in minutes in your pressure cooker, so there&#8217;s no excuse not to have a delicious breakfast this week!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ingredients</h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>6 large eggs</li><li>1 lb ground pork sausage, cooked and crumbled</li><li>1/2 cups cow&#8217;s milk</li><li>1/2 tablespoon red pepper flakes</li><li>1/2 cup onion, chopped</li><li>1/2 cup bell peppers, chopped (red or green)</li><li>1 cups Monterrey jack shredded cheese, shredded</li><li>1 cup frozen hash browns</li><li>1 teaspoon garlic powder</li><li>1 teaspoon onion powder</li><li>1/2 teaspoon salt</li><li>1 teaspoon pepper</li><li>1/2 teaspoon ground dry mustard</li></ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How can I make this lower in fat?</h2>



<p>If you&#8217;d like to make this a little lower in fat, here are some recommendations:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Use turkey sausage or chicken sausage instead of pork sausage</li><li>Use a low-fat milk</li><li>Use a low-fat cheese</li><li>Use egg whites for some or all of the eggs</li></ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can I use egg whites instead of whole eggs?</h2>



<p>This would be an adaptation that you could certainly do. When substituting whole eggs with egg whites, it is usually done at a ratio of 2 egg whites to equal one whole egg.</p>



<p>So if you wanted to substitute all of the whole eggs in this recipe, you would need to use 12 egg whites (if you are using egg whites from a container, this would be 36 Tablespoons of egg whites). You could also do a half and half substitution if you&#8217;d like as well.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are some adaptations I can make for this recipe?</h2>



<p>There are lot of fun ways you can switch up this recipe:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Add different vegetables (green onions or diced jalapeno would be a good choice)</li><li>Use bacon or ham instead of (or in addition to) ham</li><li>Use a different kind of cheese, such as cheddar cheese</li><li>Swap out half the eggs for egg whites</li></ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What type of breakfast sausage do you use?</h2>



<p>We just use whatever happens to be on sale at the supermarket. Jimmy Dean is probably our favorite brand.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can I use tater tots instead of hashbrowns?</h2>



<p>I think this would work just fine! I would make sure they were fully defrosted, though, and break them into pieces. I think it would make for a very tasty casserole!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Instructions</h2>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Brown and crumble sausage &#8211; drain excess grease</li><li>In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and spices until combined and frothy. </li><li>Add the remaining ingredients to the egg mixture and combine.</li><li>Spray your springform pan with cooking spray</li><li>Place mixture into the spring form pan</li><li>Pour 1 cup ofthe water into the inner pot</li><li>Place your trivet in the bottom of the Instant Pot</li><li>Place the springform pan on top of the trivet.</li><li>Put lid on the pot, make sure vent valve is closed, and set for 8 minutes on manual high pressure.</li><li>After the timer goes off, quick release all the pressure right away. </li></ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Do you have to use a springform pan?</h2>



<p>We do recommend making it in a springform pan and using the pot-in-pot method (pip method). You could probably also use an Instant Pot safe cake pan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What type of springform pan do you use?</h2>



<p>I used a <a href="https://amzn.to/2E7QVNA" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">7&#8243; springform pan from Fat Daddios</a> for this. However, if you don&#8217;t have one (or you want to double the recipe).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How come there is liquid on top of the breakfast casserole?</h2>



<p>This happens due to the condensation from the liquid in the Instant Pot that is required for this recipe. You can just pour it off &#8211; however, if it bothers you, you can cover the dish with aluminum foil before you cook it, and then the liquid will just collect on top of that instead.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What should I serve this with?</h2>



<p>This breakfast casserole is delicious when served with salsa or cream gravy. It is also great when paired next to toast, biscuits, or seasoned grits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Is this dish low carb?</h2>



<p>Because of the hashbrowns, this isn&#8217;t as low carb as some dishes. However, you can take leave that out, and it will still be a delicious breakfast casserole that is a little more low carb. If you omit the potatoes, I might add in more red bell pepper.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How can I store the leftovers?</h2>



<p>The leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. When reheating, you may need to add a splash of milk to help moisten it up again.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can I freeze this?</h2>



<p>Yes, you can freeze this Instant Pot Breakfast Casserole. Just wrap it tightly in foil or plastic wrap and place it in a freezer safe bag. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you&#8217;re ready to eat it, thaw it overnight in the fridge and then reheat it in the microwave or oven until warmed through.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can I make this the night before?</h2>



<p>Absolutely! In fact &#8211; we think that&#8217;s a better way to do! Just mix up all the ingredients, put them in the springform pan, cover and refrigerate over night. All you&#8217;ll have to do is cook it in the morning!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can I make this dish dairy free?</h2>



<p>If you&#8217;d like to make this dairy-free, we recommend using unflavored non-dairy milk (such as almond milk) and using your favorite non-dairy cheese.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>1 Cup dry grits </li><li>3 Cups Water</li><li>1 Cup Milk</li><li>1/2 Cup Kraft Colby Jack and Monterrey Cheese</li><li>2 large eggs</li><li>1 teaspoon of Pepper</li><li>1 teaspoon of Salt</li><li>1 lb of sausage, cooked and crumbled</li></ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Supplies</h3>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Instant Pot (works with both the 6 and 8 quart)</li><li>Medium Bowl </li><li>Silicone Egg Mold (I got mine in an Instant Pot accessories kit. I feel this is the best value!). </li></ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instructions</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Cook Sausage. Drain excess grease and set aside.</li><li>Prepare grits in desired method using 1 cup of dry grits and 3 cups of water. Set aside when done.  </li><li>Put the grits into a bowl. </li><li>Add cheese, milk, eggs, pepper, salt, and cooked sausage.</li><li>Spray Instant Pot silicone egg mold with cooking spray.</li><li>Scoop mixture into each slot, filling to the top. </li><li>Top with a little bit of shredded cheese. </li><li>Pour 1 cup of water in the bottom of your Instant Pot and then place the trivet in the pot. </li><li>Place the silicone egg mold on the trivet. </li><li>Place lid on Instant Pot. </li><li>Cook for 8 minutes  on manual high pressure</li><li>Quick pressure release all the pressure when the timer reaches zero. </li><li>Let cool in the Instant Pot for a few minutes and then remove. </li><li>Flip out of the silicone mold and enjoy!</li></ol>

<p>One of my favorite recipes we have ever shared on Clarks Condensed are these delicious <a href="https://www.clarkscondensed.com/food/sausage-grits-muffins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sausage grits muffins</a>. </p>



<p>We just kind of made them up&#8230;but boy, are they GOOD. </p>



<p>When I made some <em>Instant Pot Grits recently,</em> I thought it would be fun to try and make these Grits Muffins in the Instant Pot as well. </p>



<p>You can easily switch them up with different meats or cheese and even throw in some veggies. But it&#8217;s a really fun and yummy treat. </p>



<p>This recipe will make enough for probably three batches. It&#8217;s a great leftover grits recipe as well! </p>

<p>I would eat these in 3-5 days. </p>
